Mercedes-AMG has released the first official details on the brand new 4.0 liter V8 engine which will be found under the hood of the long-awaited AMG GT.
The new 4.0 liter V8 engine, signed by Mercedes-AMG, will be benefiting from the eco start/stop function which will help its fuel consumption and it will be getting two turbochargers which will have a maximum charge pressure of 1.2 bar and a maximum speed of 186,000 rpm. The unit has an aluminum crankcase and a closed deck design. The NANOSLIDE technology has been used for the cylinder bore surfaces and this is making them twice as hard as regular cast-ion linings.
The engine mentioned above is benefitting from the forged aluminum pistons with low friction piston rings too and this is also helping the fuel and oil consumption. The 4.0 liter V8 twin turbo has been named the M178 and it is weighing 209 kg (461 lbs). It’s meeting the Euro 6 emission standards and it has a total output of 510 HP (375 kW) at 6,250 rpm and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque, available between 1,750 rpm and 4,750 rpm. The unit will be introduced on the new Mercedes-Benz AMG GT which will be unveiled on the 9th of September and it will be making its public debut in Paris, one month later. The same engine will also be found on the next year’s C63 AMG.
