Mercedes-AMG Formula One-inspired hypercar is dubbed Project One image

The car had an internal codename of “R50” – but certainly Project One sounds so much better – also serving as a tie up with the other Mercedes-AMG hybrid beast that can only be found on the race track.

We have been getting bread crumbs since the announcement of the project – previously finding out it will have a “perfect” design – but more importantly we now know how to name this awesome car in the making. The name has been revealed by Mercedes-AMG on its homepage alongside what meagerly pass as preliminary details – telling us what we already know, this being a Formula One-inspired project of an F1 car that can legally be driven on public roads.

The good people from Affalterbach tell us the Project One will get an F1-derived engine, specifically the turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 from the championship-winning W07 Hybrid. Speaking of the hybrid powertrain, Mercedes-AMG says the combustion engine is going to be “accompanied by a purely electric and wheel selective front axle drive concept.” This means there’s a smart AWD system – most likely the V6 sending power to the rear wheels and the electric motor to the front ones, sometimes selectively. AMG also says we’re going to see “probably the most fascinating two seater that will ever hit the road,” with an installed power of more than 1,000 horsepower (735 kW).
