Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid Buses Used in Public Transport in Switzerland image

PostAuto Schweiz AG is the first company in Switzerland which disposes fuel-cell technology for public road transport.

Starting 2011, five Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid buses are seen on routes in and around Brugg as PostAuto vehicles. In the following five years PostAuto will use clean hydrogen as fuel, testing the new generation fuel-cell drive. The fuel cell stuff is tucked away on the roof, and the buses can carry the same number of passengers as a normal Citaro bus. The new Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid buses are 50% more efficient, being able to cover 240 km (150 miles) with 35 kg (77.1 lbs) of hydrogen.

This new model features amazing innovations such as powerful electric motors fitted in the wheel hubs offering 120 kW, hybridisation with energy recovery and storage in lithium-ion batteries, and electrified PTO units and more advanced fuel cells with a 5-year extended service life.

The Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid was introduced in Hamburg in November 2009, generating zero emissions and no noise, being perfect for metropolitan areas and congested inner cities. In an online survey the hybrid model was voted the best electric car with fuel cell by 18,324 readers of “Auto Bild” and “Auto Test” magazines.
