Mercedes-Benz has officially taken the wraps off the new Concept Coupe SUV during the 2014 Auto China Beijing motor show – signaling BMW’s X6 is in for some serious competition soon.
Looks like clients around the world just can’t get enough SUV’s – we have them for all tastes – from the newly introduced small crossover niche to the now soon to be crowded big SUV coupe-like crossover niche.
After BMW demonstrated that a huge SUV with a sleek look and very crammed interior space will be a hit, Mercedes-Benz is now readying its weapon – with the Concept Coupe SUV acting as a preview.
With a length of almost five meters, width of two and height of just 1.75 meters, we can expect the concept to look very dynamic in person – just don’t get your hopes up you’ll fit in the back seats if you’re higher then a pygmy. Nevertheless, besides the obvious hints to the X6, the concept also pays tributes to the 30s and 50s Silver Arrows through its Alu Beam paintjob.
“Sensual as a coupé – visionary as an SUV,” says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz. “The Concept Coupé SUV stands out thanks to its extreme proportions and in doing so interprets our hallmark Mercedes coupé design idiom perfectly. With its superior sportiness it conveys a sense of modern luxury and aesthetic aspirations of sensual clarity”, he adds.
A 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbocharged engine is in charge under the hood, sending its power through the nine-speed automatic transmission with torque converter lock-up to the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The V6 churns out 333 hp (245 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque between 1,400 and 4,000 rpm and dynamics are handled by the air suspension with selective damping and the Active Curve System taken from the S-Class Coupe.
