Mercedes-Benz plans new electric car, to rival the BMW i3 image

The German based automaker Mercedes-Benz is planning to introduce a brand new electric car which will become a direct rival for the BMW i3.

After creating the so-called ML Coupe, a direct rival for the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz is taking yet another step forward with its future lineup which will include a new electric car. The model in question is said to go head to head with the BMW i3 so the rivalry between the two companies will be taken to the next level.

The announcement hasn’t been made in an official way until now and it is actually part of a report published by the guys from Auto Motor und Sport. According to our source, Mercedes-Benz is planning a possible BMW i3 competitor. The concept car is said to be introduced sometimes next year so don’t expect the new “green” car anytime sooner than 2016 or even 2017.

As I am sure you already know by now, the BMW i3 is taking its power from an electric motor, which is good for 170 HP (125 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. This is connected to a single-speed transmission which is sending power to the rear wheels. A range extender can be added to the model, in the shape of a 650cc two-cylinder petrol burner, adding an extra 34 HP.
