The popular „Golden Steering Wheel” awards, organised every year by German publications “Bild am Sonntag”, “Auto Bild” and their European sister publications in 22 countries have announced their winners. More than 260,000 readers of the aforementioned publications registered their votes in this year’s awards, with Mercedes-Benz being the only brand to have two winning cars this year.
The M-Class won the SUV category, while the SLK won the Cabrio category. Mercedes-Benz also dominates the all-time winners list, with 21 awards received since 1976, the first year when the prizes were awarded.
The winner of the SUV class was determined in a direct vote, with the SLK winning its category after being shortlisted along with four of its competitors. After being rated by a panel of experts and after undergoing real-life testing, the SLK was also awarded the „Golden Steering Wheel” in its category.
The small car category was won by the Volkswagen Up, while the best compact car title went to the new BMW 1-Series. The mid-size and luxury category was won by the new Audi A6, with the sports car prize going to the new Porsche 911. The „Green Steering Wheel” went to Peugeot’s diesel-hybrid technology Hybrid4.
