Just like Mercedes-Benz challenged the traditional boundaries between premium and mainstream with their new CLA four door coupe, eating into the sales of traditional automakers, so does VW want to challenge from beneath.
The concept, unveiled at the Beijing auto show, as Chinese clients could also become a main target of the model, is previewing a near production model that would be based on the Jetta and ride the known Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform.
The future model would also slot beneath the Passat CC, Volkswagen’s other sleek looking four-door coupe/sedan, while still offering enough room for five people – its low height (1,422 mm) is compensated by the large width (1,838 mm), with a cargo capacity of 500 liters as well.
Underlining its intended markets – the future production model would be manufactured at Volkswagen’s plant in Puebla, Mexico and at one of the company’s existing joint-ventures in China.
The CLA four door coupe from Mercedes-Benz has been highly successful exactly on these two markets – especially since in the US it’s the most affordable model from the premium automaker, aiding the company in securing the top sales position there in 2013, ahead of the main rival – BMW.
Meanwhile, VW AG desperately needs a model that can have an impact on the US market, as its sales have continuously been under the set targets.
