According to German automobile magazine Auto Bild the 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will soon get the new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with an available performance package that boosts the total horsepower to 557.
In its standard configuration, the new power plant makes for 525 PS (386 kW / 518 bhp) – same as on the old 6.3 liter unit. But this new engine is far more efficient than that large, naturally-aspirated 6.3 liter, shaving 2.8 liters/100 km off of its fuel-economy rating – now down to 9.8 liters/100 km for the 5.5 liter bi-turbo V8.
Auto Bild’s report didn’t include torque numbers, but we estimated an increase of 51 to 125 pound-foot respectively, since the E63 has always closely mirrored the CLS63’s output.
The new performance package is reported to cost around 8,300 Euros, roughly $11,800. We expect more details to surface sometime during the New York Auto Show.
