Mercedes GLS will complete with BMW X6 from 2014 image

After the success of the BMW X6, Mercedes Benz is also thinking of extending its SUV line-up with a product that will take on the BMW X6.

According to a report from Autocar magazine, the new Mercedes will be called the GLS, and (as the name suggests) it will take the lines of the CLS 4-door into the world of SUVs.

The GLS will have less cargo room (compared to the M-class) thanks to a sporty roof line similar to the CLS sedan.

“After closely monitoring sales trends, we’ve concluded there is potential for an additional off-road model with a more sporting emphasis than the new M-class,” an insider revealed last week.

Most probably, the new GLS share its engine with the actual Mercedes ML, which means it will be sold with a choice between a 3.0-liter V6 diesel, a 3.5-litre V6 petrol and a 4.6 V8 petrol engine; the top model could get a gutsy turbocharged AMG 5.5-liter V-8 to best BMW’s X6 M.

Moreover, rumor has it that the next Range Rover Sport will also feature a coupe-like design. The X6 too will soon undergo a facelift. So, the battle of coupe-crossover giants should be interesting!
