The third-largest premium automaker in the world, Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz just showed the first pictures and revealed the first details about the latest member of its delivery-guru range.
The new CLA Shooting Brake is the latest addition to a family that has grown beyond recognition to become a hot-selling asset for the luxury automaker. Do you remember the conundrum surrounding the A-Class test that saw the car rolling out? Yes, no one seems to do – even as the launch of the first ever very small Mercedes was almost an universal scandal. Now the years have passed and the compact range is more mature than ever. It’s also larger than life: we have the traditional A and B Class, the CLA four-door coupe, the GLA crossover and now the sporty family’s “guy” – the CLA Shooting Brake station wagon.
While these models typically don’t yield the same earnings margins as the more traditional saloons in the Mercedes lineup, the German automaker is betting on the compact range to help it boost sales – as it strives to recapture the top position in the segment lost to rivals BMW and Audi.
Compact cars saw deliveries soar to 375,435 units through October – jumping 24% from the same period of 2013. And during the first 10 months of the year, the range accounted for almost one-third of Mercedes’ overall worldwide tally of 1.33 million vehicles.
