Mercedes-Maybach has recently taken the wraps off their latest version of the S Class – the S600 Guard, holding the title of the first passenger vehicle to deliver a VR10 ballistic protection level.
On the outside there’s actually almost no telling this is not your “regular” S600 in Maybach guise, which is a good thing when the persons sitting inside are actually in need of that VR10 protection level. Anyways, under the familiar styling sits a highly modified car, which was needed to achieve that world’s first certification. This entitles it to claiming it’s the safest passenger car in the world – its body and windows can take the beating from an assault rifle firing hardened steel core bullets. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard comes with special aramid and PE components, polycarbonate coating for the windows to deliver splinter protection and also protect against explosive devices.
If there is such an explosion at the side of the car, Mercedes adds the armor is as effective as if the assault with explosives came from beneath the car. This is made possible due to the newly developed underbody armoring which covers the entire area underneath the occupant compartment. There are also intelligent overlapping systems at certain critical points, such as material transitions and interstices. The Ballistics Authority in Ulm has granted the VR10 certification and the vehicle also comes with an ERV 2010 rating (Explosive Resistant Vehicles). Readily available on order, the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard sill kick off at €470,000 (plus VAT) in Germany.
