Mercedes Unimog and Zetros get military tough image

We’re not proponents of war, but we have to give it to Mercedes – these military Unimog and Zetros models are more hardcore than zombie fighting machines.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has decided to ruggedize its vehicles to display them in front of the publci during the upcoming Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition. The event takes place at the Air Force Base in Waterkloof, Centurion, and visitors will have the chance of seeing some of the toughest vehicles on the planet – the military grade Unimog U5000, the Zetros, and the Actros 3344A/45. The Unimog itself is more of an indestructible beast in any version you buy it – as the multi-purpose 4×4 vehicle has been continuously around us since the second half of the 1940s. It can be configured in just about anything – from an arctic food truck to a railroad utility vehicle.

The Zetros is a compendium of the Actros and Axor series, and its middle name is versatility – the configurations span up to a six-wheel model that has a tremendous payload capacity of 16 tons. Power of the three-axle behemoth is generated via an inline-six 7.2-liter turbodiesel that packs 960 pound-feet (1,300 Newton-meters) of torque. Of course, seeing them in army green and with huge off-road tires makes them even more unbelievable…
