US fans of the Mercedes-Benz Gelandwagen should be rejoicing now – the hardcore iteration of the G500 – the 4×4²² – is finally coming to party in America, and the moment is actually fast approaching.
The interested buyers should be checking out their dealerships early next year because the German automaker’s US division has officially confirmed what the rumor mill knew from the start. The baddie G500 4×4² will arrive in the United States early next year, but keeping in line with the G Class North American naming structure, it will be branded as the G550. This could be the only difference from the European brethren, which is immensely satisfying for future owners. Under the hood sits a biturbocharged 4.0-liter V8 capable of 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Since we’re dealing with something called 4×4² you can imagine the off-road credentials are off the charts as well.
The G550 is capable in rough terrain but in this case the approach and departure angles have gone up by 21.6 and 13.8 degrees, respectively. The breakover angle has also jumped by 23.4 degrees, ground clearance is up by 7.9 inches, and the SUV’s fording depth goes an impressively 15.8 inches. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, though you should expect to pay an arm and a leg for the model capable of surviving the Moon and Mars surfaces.
