The Japanese based automaker Mitsubishi has announced that it will attack Pikes Peak with a race version of the i-MiEV.
According to the car manufacturer, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution, which is the official name of the racer, is coming with a tube frame chassis, a carbon fiber body, a tri-motor configuration and a specially adapted all-wheel drive system. Mitsubishi says that the vehicle’s electric motors and batteries are actually similar to the ones used on the production version of the i-MiEV.
“Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will enter two all-electric vehicles in the Electric Class of the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. MMC will be aiming for victory in the Electric Class with the i-MiEV Evolution, a specially prepared competition version based on the i all-electric vehicle. MMC is also entering a regular production i in the event”, as the automaker has announced.
Mitsubishi is saying that the i-MiEV Evolution is powered by three electric motors, one in the front and two in the rear, which are producing a total output of 322 HP. Power is being sent to an AWD system. The Pikes Peak race is a challenging 12.4 mile hill climb which starts at 9,390 feet and ends at 14,110 feet, with 156 corners. The race was first held in the Colorado mountains in 1916.
