The troubled Japanese automaker, once a legend in off-road and rallies thanks to its SUVs and Lancer series, is trying to get back in the game with the promise of a new SUV, ‘the best vehicle Mitsubishi has ever produced.’
The company isn’t actually revolutionizing the wheel, because the attached teaser image has a lot in common with one released more than three years ago for the XR-PHEV – and it was also followed by the XR-PHEV II concept that keep serving as a preview for the slow-cooking all-new compact crossover. Aside from those concepts the brand also delivered the eX, which should be the one we’re guiding our assumptions towards as the best indicator for the production series model. The design is most likely falling in line with the three concepts for bold styling and a raked roofline that will put the model in the coupe SUV niche, as per Mitsubishi’s wishes.
There’s a chunky character line visible, as well as beefy wheel arches and an interesting shape for the taillights. Up front, the fascia should be very close to the eX – and in terms of dimensions the production model should come in above the ASX / Outlander Sport and just below the Outlander. Apparently for North America the automaker has prepared a completely new turbocharged four cylinder, as hinted by Don Swearingen, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Mitsubishi Motors North America.
