NACTOY “short list” could give the edge to US automakers image

The North American Car and Truck awards are just as important as their European or global counterparts. So, the Detroit three should be bragging with their seven models making the “short” lists of the two accolades.

60 journalists select the North American Car and Truck of the Year and after narrowing down the cars and trucks to 10 cars and 12 trucks, respectively, will spend the time before the final announcement due January 12 – during the 2015 North American International Auto Show – evaluating and testing the vehicles.

Most importantly, the Detroit three have made it close to the final rounds with seven models on a 22 car and trucks list. It’s a one third percentage that leaves European, Japanese and other Asian brands battling for the rest of the entries.

For the car award we have two US, three Japanese and two Korean models. Things change when it comes to trucks – five US born models, four Japanese and other three from Europe. The Truck award also takes into account Sport Utility Vehicles, such as Porsche’s new Macan.

The Chrysler 200 and Ford Mustang made it on the car list while the Chevrolet Colorado and Tahoe, Ford F-150, GMC Canyon and Lincoln MKC are in the truck/SUV category.
