Denny Hamlin who won the last two June races at Michigan, was involved in a crash on lap 134 when he spun through the grass coming out of turn 4. Hamlin’s car imploded as he rolled to pit lane and came to rest in a ball of fire.
Hamlin was able to get the car stopped and get out as track firefighters doused his Toyota with fire extinguishers.
“I’ve never been in that position before,” said Hamlin, who started the race in ninth position. “I had seen it with other guys, but I’ve never known what it’s actually like. It gets hot.”
“I thought for a second there I was OK,” Hamlin said. “It was just in the back and then something exploded in the front and it caught on fire.”
Hamlin finished the race in 34th and dropped one spot to fifth in the driver standings.
