The new generation of the biggest SUV in the Audi range, the Q7, will be launched in 2012, so the competition from BMW, Mercedes or Porsche should be aware that a powerful rival is on its way.
No official details about its engine range have been made public yet but the new Q7 is expected to get the 3.0 liter and some V8s, but a hybrid version is also taken into consideration, following its smaller brother, the Q5.
According to the German manufacturer, the next generation of the Q7 will lose some weight, around 300 kg or 650 pounds, compared to the 180 (400 pounds) of its rivals, like the Cayenne and the Touareg.
“There is no doubt that crossovers are still selling like hotcakes even though the trend seems to be shifting toward more compact models”, said the Audi chairman Rupert Stadler.
The next generation of the Q7 will make its debut next year as a 2013 model and Audi has other “surprises” up its sleeve like the new Q6, Q1 or the Q4, which is possibly in the works. The Q7’s platform could also be shared by the new Bentley SUV, which is set to make its debut in 2014.
