The new generation of the Toyota RAV4 electric vehicle is almost here and after the Japanese automaker used to sell the EV RAV4 more than 14 years ago with no success, the new version of the eco-friendly crossover is expected to hit the showrooms next year.
According to autocar.co.uk, the RAV4 EV will come with the Tesla electric powertrain. “Tesla is a catalyst for the industry and is pushing forward electric vehicle development. We will carry on as we are, pushing forward and showing people that not only are electric vehicles viable, they are also the best. Major manufacturers were taking too long to develop electric cars so it needed a firm like Tesla to act as a catalyst”, said the Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Toyota says that the lithium metal oxide battery will add an additional 220 pounds to the weight, compared to the V6 version, but the baby-SUV will still have the same 0 to 60 mph acceleration time.
After Toyota and Tesla have joined forces, the new generation of the RAV4 EV is expected to be made at the Woodstock, Ontario plant and rumors are that Tesla will receive 50 million USD from Toyota, as an investment, along with 100 million USD for supplying the new electric SUV with the battery, motor, gearbox and power electronics.
