Even if the current generation of the Phaeton isn’t that old, Volkswagen decided to refresh it by releasing yet a newer version that will be developed under the VW631 codename and it should hit the market by 2015.
According to carmagazine, the new generation of the luxurious vehicle will ride on the MLM Evo platform that should be lighter while improving the handling but the main surprise comes with the engine range.
Rumors are that the new Phaeton generation will get a new four-cylinder engine, two six-cylinder units and a plug-in hybrid powertrain and even if Volkswagen didn’t say anything officially about this, it would be obvious that the new engines will be more powerful than the current V8 and W12.
Carmagazine.co.uk also says that the new generation of the Phaeton could come in the form of a four-door coupe, but a five-door hatchback and an estate are also being taken into consideration by Volkswagen.
The last rumor says that the new Phaeton will be cheaper than the current generation and it will be placed on the market between the Audi A6 and A7 instead of being a rival to the A8, Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7-Series.
