Five years after its official introduction and the BMW 5-Series is getting ready to receive a new generation.
Our spy photographers have managed to capture the new generation of the BMW 5-Series while it was being tested out in a cold climate. The model in question is wearing some camouflage on its body but, even so, we can still spot some of its tweaks and features. However, this being just a simple test mule at the time, don’t be surprised if the final product will turn out to be quite different.
The new BMW 5-Series generation is getting new door handles, a new layout of A-post and front door, air breather in the front wings, a sharp horizontal edge over the front and the rear side doors, a flatter rear window and several other tweaks. The architecture and the matrix will be shared with other models in the lineup, including the next-gen 7-Series. Expect carbon fiber reinforced material technology in the structure and in some key body panels, such as the boot lid, bonnet, roof and doors.
This material means, besides the added strength, a weight loss, which will be translated into better handling, improved performance and fuel consumption. The engine lineup is expected to be entirely new and this will add the 1.5 liter three-cylinder unit too, from its smaller brothers. A plug-in hybrid is also in the works. The new BMW 5-Series should be officially unveiled in 2016, which will be making it a 2017 model year. More on it remains unknown for the moment.
