Our spy photographers have managed to capture the new generation of the Opel Astra on camera while it was being tested out.
Opel has started the development of the new Astra generation and the first spy shots of the hatchback can be seen below, after the jump. The model in question is believed to be based on the same D2XX platform which will be used on the new Chevrolet Cruze and which is also found on the Ampera and the Volt, but even so, the new Astra looks more like the current one than like an American sedan. As usual, the future generation of the Opel Astra will rival models like the VW Golf 7, the award-winning Peugeot 308 or the Ford Focus, amongst others.
The popular hatchback is said to shed approximately 50 to 100 kg from its weight, depending on the model chosen, as lighter suspension components will be used on it, along with smaller engines. Several body styles will become available for the future Astra, like the 5-door hatchback, the GTC, the Sports Tourer wagon or the sedan and power should come from a new SIDI Turbo family with 3- and 4-cylinder units. The design of the new model will be influenced by the Monza Concept. We’re not sure when the new Astra will be unveiled but chances are this will go public at the Paris Motor Show, this October.
