Our spy photographers have managed to capture the next generation of the Opel Astra on camera, while it was being tested on public roads.
One of the most important models coming from Opel, the Astra, is getting ready to receive a new generation, five years after the “J” has been introduced. The hatchback will rival the award winning Peugeot 308, along with the new generation of the Volkswagen Golf or the Renault Megane. Rumors are saying that its development will be taking place alongside a new-gen Chevy Cruze, on the Old Continent, and it’s said that both compact cars will be based on the same D2XX platform, which is also used on the Volt and Ampera.
The 2015 Opel Astra will be shedding weight off from every major component and this is expected to make it 50 to 100 kg lighter than the current model. Lighter suspension components, new alloy wheels, different fabrication methods and smaller engines will be used on the new generation of the hatchback. The Astra K will come in several body styles and this means the five-door hatchback, the three-door GTC, the Sports Tourer wagon and the sedan. The engine lineup will include 3- and 4-cylinder engines from the new SIDI Turbo family. These are already available on the current Astra, Insignia, Cascada and Adam. Its design is said to be influenced by the Monza Concept. More details on the upcoming Opel Astra are limited for the moment.
