The Dieselgate scandal triggered – at least apparently (we reserve final judgement for when these electrics actually hit the road) – a full strategy swing over at Volkswagen, now keenly interesting in spreading the “green religion” around the world.
And the latter part is important – because they’re on a rock band world tour with their series of I.D. electric car concepts. First up was the original I.D. concept showcased last year at the Paris Motor Show – a hatchback the size of the Golf but with the interior space of a Passat. Then in January this year they fielded the I.D. Buzz for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit – an electric and autonomous preview for a possible Microbus return. Now Volkswagen is teasing us to the introduction of the third member of the family – the third I.D. will appear in China – during April’s 2017 Auto Shanghai.
It appears – after seeing the teaser – that we’re dealing with another case of coupe-SUV fever, and just like its predecessors it actually previews a possible production model set to appear in the years to come. All of them are zero-emissions fully electric cars, all of them using the same new Modular Electric Drive architecture that will actually spawn electric cars for the Skoda, Seat and Audi brands as well. The new I.D. concept is electric and features autonomous tech, but it also gains an all-wheel-drive system.
