Renault Nissan Automotive India (RNAIPL) will double the capacity of the Oragadam facility, near Chennai – India to 4,00,000 units per annum.
The company will hire around 500 hands to take care of expanded capacities, an official said on Wednesday.
Asked whether the company would be required to make additional investments, he said so far Nissan has invested Rs 2,800 Crore at the Chennai facility and this would be sufficient for the plant expansion.
About their plans to increase the localisation level of their products, CEO Kiminobu Tokuyama said this year they would be increasing the total number of local suppliers to 150-160.
“We are already having 116 suppliers.. this year we will be increasing them to 150-160.”, he said adding currently the localisation level of their products was 85-90 per cent.
Currently, Nissan manufactures the Micra hatchback and Sunny sedan in India while other models like the Teana sedan, the X-Train SUV and the 370Z sportscar are brought into India as completely built units(CBU).
The company plans to use India as an export hub, and exported more units of Micra as compared to the units sold in the domestic market, last year. In addition, the Japanese automaker would begin exports of its latest sedan ‘Sunny’ in March, a top company official said.
