Novelis recently declared that it its aluminum sheets are used for the structure of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL.
The newly launched 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL has its structure designed in aluminum, and Novelis was the one to provide aluminum sheets and rolled products. This new all-aluminum body will significantly reduce the weight of the car by about 140kgs (300 pounds), will improve the fuel economy, strength and crash safety. The material was used in the hood, the doors and different structural applications such as the transmission tunnel.
The two companies collaborated before for the use of new alloy Anticorodal-300 (Ac-300) to manufacture a new piece that is joined by friction stir welding. Roland Harings, Novelis vice president of global automotive, declared that the Ac-300 was created to be used in automotive structural applications. The new aluminum Mercedes-Benz SL body weighs only 254kgs (560 pounds).
“As Novelis continues to expand its activities in the global automotive market, working closely with our customers to match their needs is essential,” Harings said. “Aluminum provides a more dynamic driving performance and lower fuel consumption creating measurable results for our customers.”
