Volkswagen AG said on Tuesday it would price the base model of its new Beetle small car at $18, store 995 in the United States.
The 200 hp 2.0 TSI turbo version rings the registers at $24, online 765, including destination.
The base 2012 Beetle gets the 170-horsepower 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine linked to a five-speed manual transmission.
Standard features on the 2012 model include split-folding rear seats, 17-inch alloy wheels , and an auxiliary input for the eight-speaker sound system. Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, heated front seats, and three-color interior ambient lighting are optional on the 2.5 and standard on the turbo.
When the 2012 goes on sale this fall, VW expects improved mileage ratings, too, forecasting a best of 22 miles per gallon in town and 31 highway for the gasoline model vs. a best of 20/29 for the old one.
Comprehensively updated for 2012, the new model has a more muscular, chiseled appearance compared to its cartoonish predecessor. VW is hoping the new styling some have described as “Porsche-like” will attract more male customers, as the previous model’s customer base skewed heavily female.
