Premium automaker Audi Ag. has confirmed plans to launch a lightweight, more focused GT version of its R8 Spyder in early 2012.
Destined to be previewed at Le Mans in June before its proper unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the R8 GT Spyder has been teased with these preview sketches released to the British motor press.
The car’s 0-62mph time is less than four seconds and top speed is close to 200mph thanks to a version of the R8’s V10, tweaked to produce 553bhp. Ceramic brakes and full LED lights will also feature.
In the coupé GT, power is channelled to all four wheels via a beefed-up version of Audi’s six-speed R-tronic robotised manual ’box and a viscous coupling that provides a 15 per cent front/85 per cent rear torque split as standard.
Production is expected to be capped around the same as the coupe’s 333 units worldwide, likely with a slightly higher price tag.
