A special and unique WRX STI has been prepared in partnership by Subaru and Prodrive in a bid to take down the record of the world famous Isle of Man TT.
The star car will be joined by a star driver – British rally champion Mark Higgins, who is actually the current record holder. Back in 2014 at the wheel of a 2015 model year US-Spec WRX STI he rounded up the 37-mile course in 19 minutes and 15 seconds. Now he’s back in an attempt to improve his own record and this time around he’s here with a car that has been modified specifically for this purpose by the experts at UK-based Prodrive. Compared to a regular WRX STI this one-off has been doing the rounds at the gym and took on a diet – with Subaru Technica International (STI) and Prodrive making rid of lots of the interior to fit in a roll cage. There’s also a new aerodynamic body kit with a massive rear wing that should do well to improve performance.
We may remember Subaru and Prodrive have been partners for year as in the 1990s and 2000s they dominated the rally world – so fans may rejoice seeing the two companies working together again. The 2016 edition of the Isle of Man TT event will be held between May 28 and June 10 and we shouldn’t be surprised if Higgins manages to go below the 19 minutes threshold considering the level of upgrades this special WRX STI has.
