One week was enough for the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Launch Edition to sell out image

The 1, 000-examples series of the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition allocated to the US has already reached sold-out status, just a week after the order books had been opened.

American fans of the MX-5 seem to dig the idea of having the Miata around them all year long – an usability feature brought to them by the introduction of the RF version – or Retractable Fastback. It has a retracting hardtop and Mazda opted to split the limited version in two lots – 500 units were reserved for current customers, the portion being snatched in a week. Then the rest of the general public had the other half – and they needed just 13 hours to reserve them all.

The Launch Edition, with deliveries expected early 2017, has been made available with an exclusive tri-coat Machine Gray Metallic paint, a hand-painted black roof, and Auburn nappa leather. It uses the Grand Touring trim as the base, so it also packs LED running lights, automatic climate control, heated seats, and safety tech such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane departure warning – and the lucky Mazda fans also get from the company a 42-millimeter Tourneau watch. In the US the RF launch Edition has the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 horsepower (115 kilowatts) and 148 pound-feet (200 Newton-meters) of torque – with the option of using a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.
