Opel/Vauxhall OnStar connected system brings carjacking protection image

It’s not a feature per se of the system, which has numerous other traits, but thanks to the advanced system a stolen Vauxhall Astra was recovered without damage after being stolen.

The previous generation Astra – an Opel mainstay but sold under the Vauxhall brand in the United Kingdom, was actually the very first model to pack General Motors-developed OnStar technology. There’s a wide array of services, such as remote vehicle diagnostics, directions, and emergency assistance in the event of an accident. But this time around it helped track the car after being stolen. This tale happened to James Watson from Glasgow, Scotland – he drove the car to work and parked it in the center of the city, but even before leaving the car he was forced out by a thief who left with his vehicle.

He immediately notified the police, also telling them it has the OnStar system, which is equipped with a GPS locator. Working directly with the OnStar team, the police caught the perpetrator at a nearby gas station. The system was also used by the operator to remotely deactivate the ignition once the thief turned off the engine. “It was a terrible experience, one I wouldn’t wish on anybody else,” owner James Watson commented on the situation. “After the initial shock of what happened subsided, I realized that we could locate the car – and probably the offender – through OnStar.”
