The Japanese automaker is looking ready to throw the gauntlet in the hot hatch segment, as the Civic Type R Prototype looks practically ready to hit the assembly lines.
Honda has also confirmed a big threat to the current leader in the hot segment – Ford Focus RS. Just like the latter, the Civic Type R will become available officially in the United States and will feature the presentation of the model at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, in early November. The new Type R is based on the latest installment in the Civic saga – now in its tenth generation – and has splashy red accents, an enormous wing on the hatch, but more importantly 20-inch wheels clad in 245 mm “high-performance” tires.
The automaker has not released too many details about the model – but judging by the hood scoop we should expect an update of the two-liter turbo that is currently used, packing at the very least in excess of 300 horsepower. The new Type R will be manufactured, as always, at the company’s Swindon factory in England, from where it will be shipped globally – including the US.
