The Euro-spec all new 2015 Ford Mondeo has been (re)introduced during the 2014 Paris Motor Show after it was originally showcased at the same even but during the 2012 edition!
While the US version – called the Fusion – is essentially almost the same as the Mondeo (now a global vehicle), Ford has really taken its time before finally deciding when to start sales of the new model. The mid-sized car is facing a tough opposition in the segment, as Volkswagen had plenty of time to also introduce its new generation Passat.
“The all-new Mondeo is a significant new chapter for one of Europe’s best-known vehicles with a history dating back more than 20 years,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. “Mondeo will make high specification and premium features accessible to even more drivers – including our industry-first Inflatable Rear Seatbelt and Ford’s first LED headlights in Europe.”
At launch, with the model set to reach dealerships sometime next year, engine options will include the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol variants, while later on the acclaimed fuel-efficient 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine (International Engine of the Year three years in a row) also joining the lineup during 2015.
The diesel side would be covered by 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre ECOnetic engines, boasting emissions as low as 94g/km and 107g/km of CO2, respectively. There would also be available all-wheel drive variants, and body styles include five-door, four door (hybrid) and a Europe-only station wagon.
The hybrid powertrain has a specially-developed 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor, which gets power from a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery for expected emissions of just 99g/km of CO2.
