The 2012 S8 is not what you can call new and the luxurious vehicle has already seen daylight with the Frankfurt Motor Show, generic being also scheduled for delivery in both Europe and US, but now Audi has decided to release some new images of the sporty model and we just had to present them.
The new generation of the Audi S8 is powered by the newly developed 4.0 liter TFSI twin-turbo V8 engine which is developing 520 horsepower, giving it a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of just 4.2 seconds while burning an average of 10.2 liters of fuel every 100 kilometers which is translated to 23.06 mpg in “American”.
Even if the engine in the 2012 Audi S8 has been downsized from the 5.2 liter naturally-aspirated V10, the new V8 is developing 15 percent more power while consuming 23 percent less fuel.
One of the most interesting technologies is definitely the cylinder on demand system which is activated at low to moderate engine loads, with the upper limit between 25 and 35 percent of peak torque, or 160 and 250 Nm (118 – 184 lb-ft), depending on the engine speed. The coolant temperature must be at least 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), third gear or higher must have been selected and the engine must be running at more than idle speed, between 960 and 3.500 rpm.
If these preconditions are satisfied, the system closes the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 on both tanks and the V8 continues to run as a V4 with a regular firing order (1-4-6-7), but only two cylinders instead of four being ignited on each revolution of the crankshaft.
The new generation of the Audi S8 has been priced at 111.900 EUR and the model will be launched in early summer 2012. You can watch the photo gallery below. Enjoy!
