Only a day before the new 208 should have been officially unveiled by Peugeot, a German website has taken the French based automaker’s surprise by publishing a fresh set of images which clearly show the 207’s successor, the model which is supposed to revive the GTI brand.

The new generation of the popular hatchback named the 208 is expected to make its way into the auto market starting from spring 2012, with the model being offered with a choice of five diesel and two gasoline engines.

Rumors say that the most economic engine will have an average fuel consumption of just 3.4 liters / 100 km and the gasoline powered units will have only three cylinders and will be offered with two displacements: 1.0 and 1.2 liters, with the smallest unit emitting just 99 grams of CO2 / km, with an average fuel consumption of 4.3 liters every 100 kilometers.

Compared to its predecessor, the new 208 is seven centimeters shorter and 110 kilograms lighter but with a serious “promise” to have an improved handling which should increase the driving sensations.

The new Peugeot 208 is expected to feature a high-performance version in the form of the GTI, with the French automaker trying to revive the popular hatch from the ‘80s and ‘90s, which might be sold in France under the RC name.

The Peugeot 208 will be officially unveiled on November 2, 2011, when the French based automaker will release more details on the model.
