The German based automaker Mercedes-Benz has recently announced that the new Popemobile to be used by Pope Benedict XVI is based on the brand new M-Class.
When thinking of head of states, names like Angela Merkel, Francois Hollande, David Cameron or Barack Obama pop op in our minds but let’s not forget that Pope Benedict XVI is a head of state too, besides being the spiritual leader for more than a billion Catholics around the world. The Pope is in charge of the Vatican, a self-governing enclave of the city of Rome and just like a real head of state, he is using a special vehicle.
The newest Popomobile is based on the new generation of the M-Class and it was delivered by Mercedes-Benz recently, with the “help” of the company’s CEO, Dr. Dieter Zetsche. The new Popemobile has improved entry with a swing-out tailgate and the dome has been extended, offering more space to the vehicle. No words on what engine the new three-door Popemobile is using have been announced yet. Mercedes-Benz has been providing the Vatican with cars for more than 80 years and the first model to be delivered to the Pope was used by Pius XI back in 1930.
