PSA Peugeot-Citroen will make three Citroen DS models – the DS5, here a sedan and an SUV – together with its Chinese partner Changan Automobile Group by 2014.
According to a report from Beijing newspaper Economic Observer cited by Automotive News, local production will begin next summer for the DS5 and in 2014 for the sedan and SUV. The newspaper cited Ying Zhanwan, vice president of the Changan PSA Peugeot-Citroen joint venture, who gave no further details on the three models that will be built in China.
In June, the Citroen DS4 and DS5 launched in China, with the DS3 hitting the market in August. All three models are imported into China. So far, Changan PSA Peugeot-Citroen has opened 13 dealerships for the DS models. The number of sales outlets is expected to rise to 70 by the end of 2013, Ying was quoted as saying by the Economic Observer.
Although Changan PSA Peugeot-Citroen did not release sales of the three imported models, LMC Automotive said sales through October were 26 DS3s, 161 DS4s and 145 DS5s.
Based in the southern city of Shenzhen, Changan PSA is a 50-50 joint venture between Changan and PSA. PSA also has a joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Corporation in China that manufactures the Citroen C2, C-Quatre, C4 Elysee as well as the Peugeot 207, 307, 308, 408 and 508.
