Renault takes the wraps off Twingo GT image

The French automaker has decided the cute and cuddly Twingo city car needs some beefed up credentials so it prepared the hotter 110 hp Twingo GT version, complete with rear-wheel drive.

The Twingo and the Smart lineup share the same architecture – so having the Twingo GT with 110 hp, rear wheel drive and a manual transmission does sound a lot like an upcoming Smart ForFour Brabus (after all the regular Twingo and standard ForFour do share the same assembly line in Novo Mesto, Slovenia). But here it’s Renault Sport’s engineers who massaged the turbocharged rear-mounted 0.9-liter, three-cylinder engine and have come up with 110 horsepower (up from 90 hp) and 170 newton meters (up from 135 Nm) of torque. The added oomph, which is currently a match for the Smart ForTwo Brabus, appeared via an upgraded air intake system and modified engine mapping. The standard manual transmission has also been reworked for a slightly sportier feel.

The performance specifications remain a mystery, but we do know the standard Twingo 0.9 TCe goes to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 10.8 seconds and tops out at 103 mph (165 km/h). The performance should be – considering the slightly larger size and weight – very close to the Brabus-tuned ForTwo which does the sprint in 9.5 seconds and maxes out at 102.5 mph (165 km/h). Design wise, the Twingo GT has bespoke 17-inch alloys, a more aggressive body kit complete with lateral air intakes and a new Piment Orange paint. We also noticed the dual exhaust tips and lower stance that bodes well with the NACA aircraft-inspired striping. Other hue options include the Profond Black, Glacier White or a Lunaire Grey. The interior hasn’t been shown yet, but the automaker said it gets orange trimming, aluminum pedal caps, zamak gear lever knob, and unique door sills with “Renault Sport” branding. The ride and handling have also been tweaked, thanks to the unique chassis and suspension calibrations, special ESP programming and variable-rate steering.
