America’s most iconic muscle car, the Ford Mustang, is likely getting a ten speed automatic gearbox for the 2018 model year update – delivering a new meaning to the term kicking it into high gear.
According to the latest leak, the Ford Mustang is ready to fight the new generation Camaro and whatever the Dodge Challenger has in store with a new transmission option – a ten-speed automatic gearbox. The leaked information came in the form of a dealership employee noticing the ten-speed auto listed in an online parts catalog from the company. Of course, the second largest US automaker hasn’t officially confirmed the information so early, but the leak appears to be the real deal and thus we should see the new option headlining the roster of changes that come with the 2018 model year that should be out sometimes in 2017.
Ford already has a ten-speed automatic gearbox available for the 2017 model year F-150 pickup truck when it’s mated to the 3.5-liter V6. And putting that one into the Mustang would go a long way towards matching the Camaro’s 2017 model year ZL1 – especially given the fact that its transmission is actually the result of combined effort from both General Motors and Ford. The 2018 MY Mustang is of course getting a tweaked version of the ‘box which is expected to improve fuel economy for the pony car thanks to the added high gear cruising range. It should also be very fast, if we take for word Chevrolet’s claim the Camaro ZL1 transmission is even faster than Porsche’s PDK.
