The fourth generation Megane is shaping up as a pretty major success for Renault as the automaker has opened a completely new chapter for the popular compact model.
The previous generation has been considered rather boring and tedious but the new Megane has stirred the things up in the Golf class. The French have nailed right the major issues – a completely new, revolutionary (not evolutionary) design, a high-tech interior and sweet versions. Among them we can mention the Megane GT that brings 202 hp to the table – not long ago the benchmark power for hot hatches in the segment. The model was also made available from the start of deliveries and it even came with a unique four-wheel steering. But we all know that Renault has to deliver sometime in the near future the feisty Megane RS and fans may be well rewarded when it does come out. That’s because a recent report citing an undisclosed source from the ranks of Renaultsport has delivered some preliminary specs.
You’ll need to take this with a pinch of salt as nothing is confirmed so far, but apparently the 2018 Megane RS will come out with a five-door setup just like the Clio RS to enhance practicality. Renault has already said the new RS will up the ante on power compared to the outgoing 275-hp Megane and now the rumor mill has a tentative figure – more than 300 hp, which could put it in line with the current champion, Ford’s Focus RS. Additionally, it would be pretty mandatory for Renault to also make the switch to an all-wheel drive layout. And most importantly, the massaged turbocharged 2.0-liter engine should come out linked to both a standard six speed manual gearbox and an optional dual-clutch EDC transmission to keep everyone happy.
