The rumors of the resurfacing of the BMW 8 Series have taken various shapes over the past few years and it appears now the official platform codenames G14/G15 have been uncovered to confirm the repartition.
It appears some of the existing models in the 6 Series will die out – for example the slender 6 Series Gran Coupe to make room for the resurfaced 8 Series. According to various rumors, the Bavarian manufacturer is already developing and engineering a new sports platform with coupe and convertible versions to become rivals for the Mercedes S Class Coupe and Cabrio – with the models bearing the 8 Series signature. There’s also a report uncovering the official platform G14/G15 internal codenames. If this is right, we thus have confirmation of the 8 Series being green lit – with a scheduled arrival on the market sometimes in 2019 or 2020 as the last representatives of the CLAR architecture.
This is why the internal codenames share a striking similarity with the 7 Series (G11/G12), the upcoming future 5 Series (G30/G31), and new 3 Series (G20). The 8 Series should pack very familiar engine options – 4.4-liter V8 and the 3.0-liter V6, modified for even more power and fuel efficiency. There’s also a possible plug-in hybrid, but no pure EV since the CLAR platform was not designed to host batteries.
