Atieva, an electric vehicle startup not unlike Tesla Motors, is aiming to bring to life an all new luxury sedan to market – and the parallels with the latter company just keep pouring.
For starters, the company has been founded by Bernard Tse, a former Tesla Vice President and board member. The startup also counts today on the services of Peter Rawlinson, Tesla VP and Model S Chief Engineer, along with several other EV experts from Tesla and other companies – as they strive to release on the market a new electric vehicle that has been designed and engineered by them from the ground up. The company has already amassed hundreds of millions in funding from different investors, bigger or smaller, but until now details had been pretty well kept.
Now a new report is coming to shed some light on the project, with Atieva allegedly already testing the powertrain inside a Mercedes-Benz Vito commercial van named “Edna.” According to sources, the drivetrain makes the van “fly” to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds – very close to the best times achieved by the quickest Model S. The 2018 sedan is targeted to go down to just 2.7 seconds, allegedly besting the 12-cylinder Ferraris of the world. Rawlinson is now the company’s CTO and apparently the sedan, developed under the code name Project Cosmos, will be inspired – at least in part – by the Audi A7.
