The incipient luxury brand – which has been recently introduced as the upscale division of Hyundai – is reportedly going to bring to the market a wide array of new plug-in hybrid vehicles.
According to a recent interview, Hyundai Motor America chief executive officer Dave Zuchowski has officially confirmed the Genesis brand will begin unveiling a pack of plug-in hybrid models. We believe alternative-propulsion engines are going to be really important – even more important in the luxury market than they are in the mainstream market,” was quoted Zuchowski as saying. The executive became mysterious after the declaration and refrained from naming the models to be packing a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Though that could be very easy to figure out since currently the brand’s lineup only has two models – the G80 and G90 sedans. The line-up will further grow afterwards via the addition of a base sedan going against the likes of the BMW 3 Series and a couple of crossover models.
This decision shouldn’t come as a surprise since most of the luxury brands already have them or plan to introduce them in the near future. BMW and Mercedes are ahead of the pack and more plug in hybrid entries are expected to come from Audi, Cadillac and Infiniti. So far, the flagship G90 sedan can only be had with two powertrain options: a biturbo 3.3-liter V6 with 365 horsepower and a top of the line 5.0-liter V8 engine sporting 420 hp. The other offering, the G80, is expected to have under the hood a well known 3.8-liter V6 engine churning out 311 hp.
