It’s a bit of a nonsense here – the most rugged and reliable Land Rover to get more advanced technology even than the latest Discovery, but since we’re dealing with an all new generation the expectations are higher than the moon.
The new Defender, a model that has to fill the shoes of the 67-year old offroad legend, is allegedly being equipped with more technology than the latest Discovery incarnation. Land Rover has been a pioneer in terms of off-road technology – having invented things such as the Hill Descent Control and Terrain Response system – is apparently willing to make the new Defender coming in 2019 the world’s most capable off-road vehicle. According to the rumor mill, the major engineering phase is now complete and is already tested with prototypes at secret locations all over the world.
While a true legend on its own, the Defender has been a struggle for Land Rover in terms of business case – hence the big delay. The sales that need to be of more than 50,000 examples to warrant profitability today are also clear indications that its proverbial design ‘toughness’ will be scaled back, even Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth confirming the new Defender will make use aluminum architecture of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery. “It was one of the saddest moments of my career to end production of the old Defender,” commented Speth. “So we are working very hard to give it an authentic successor.”
