It seems Volkswagen hasn’t given up on its strategy to become a greener automaker – we’re having doubts now, because you know, Dieselgate – as per a recent leak showcasing their electric model strategy.
First things first – the iconic Microbus is apparently ready to finally get a spiritual successor after fans have been waiting for the moment for decades. This is via the production version of the electric ID Buzz concept, which is according to the leaked roadmap slated for production the very last, around 2022. Naturally, the start of the electric party is going to be given by the original ID concept morphing into production sometime in 2019. Interestingly, aside from the three ID concepts that will become production versions, we’re also given first information about two other models.
It seems the markets of China and United States will also receive the I.D. Lounge, and the I.D. AEROe – the latter being the most interesting of them, as it seems to take the form of an aerodynamic, sporty machine. VW has partnered with JAC to produce hybrid and electric vehicles in China, so these could very well be produced there. Meanwhile, the I.D. hatchback will be sold in Europe only, the I.D. Cross will be sold in Europe and China, and there’s no specific information about the I.D. Buzz so we may be looking at a global model.
