Fans waiting for an even more hardcore treatment of the AMG GT R – the menacing Black Series – should be prepared for the long haul, because according to rumors this flagship version won’t arrive anytime soon.
The Mercedes-AMG GT range is currently championed by its top spec R version, packing a massaged biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine giving up no less than 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque. Those craving for more are apparently in for a big wait, because the return of the Black Series moniker won’t happen anytime soon, instead the producer intending to wait until near the end of the AMG GT’s life cycle. Mercedes-AMG’s chief, Tobias Moers, hinted the GT R Black Series will indeed be arriving – most likely to serve as the last hurrah for the generation, just like it happened with the SLS AMG Black Series.
AMG’s big boss has even hinted at some of the specifications – for example it will naturally come with even more power, so we could be seeing the GT surge past the 600 hp threshold. In addition, even more weight will be saved compared to the 1,630 kilograms of the Euro-spec R – and we can also imagine the engineers will fine tune the aerodynamics as well. That means the R’s performance credentials – 3.6 seconds to 62 mph (100 kph) and 198 mph (318 kph) maximum speed will easily be surpassed.
