According to Mercedes sales and marketing boss Ola Kallenius, who is seen by many specialists as the next CEO after Zetsche completes his current term, a new subbrand is being mulled as a BMW i fighter.
The executive said he personally likes the idea of a new subbrand at Mercedes that would focus on alternatively-powered vehicles, much the same way does the “i” at BMW. But before that idea becomes a reality he feels Mercedes has more work to do in terms of releasing even more plug-in hybrid and electric models before substantiating an entire subbrand. He also tipped us to three electric cars coming from Mercedes by the end of the year: an all new generation of the B-Class Electric Drive and two green models under the Smart brand. Also in the cards is a GLC F-Cell hydrogen powered SUV that should come next year and Källenius also added Mercedes will have a roster of ten plug-in hybrid vehicles by the start of next year.
Mercedes is looking today to invest most of its resources in such green vehicles and we can see a theoretical eco-minded subbrand is possible right away if it encompasses all these models. The Mercedes’ sales and marketing boss added this eco-friendly path will have an impact on the entirety of the company’s lineup. By the way, they may have to launch a “i” rival soon after BMW announced just days ago it will introduce a new electric flagship under the subbrand by 2021, when the company is also going to bring “the next generation of electro-mobility to the road.”
