According to a recent media report, Mercedes-Benz, the third largest premium automaker in the world, seeks to introduce competing models for the Audi TT sportscar and Porsche Panamera four door coupe.
A German magazine reported the news, claiming the automaker mulls to further expand its lineup in a bid to lift delivery volumes; with auto motor und sport saying the two new models would be developed under the company’s AMG performance unit colors. According to company sources, with the persons declining to reveal their identity because the strategy is not public matter yet, the magazine said Mercedes would unveil the Audi TT rival – riding on the MFA2 front-wheel-drive architecture – sometimes after the platform debuts in the next generation A Class compact in 2017 or 2018. The styling of the TT competitor would be mostly based on the recently launched AMG GT sports car and the make could also have in preparation a soft-top cabrio variant.
The other planned model, a rival to the coupe-themed Panamera four-door sedan would use the E Class as a basis, using a stand-alone design that would differ from just taking a sporty cue to the E Class sedan. The upcoming model would be premiered sometimes after the next generation E Class would be unveiled in 2016. Mercedes has been deadlocked for years in a three-way race to reassert itself as the top luxury automaker of the world, after losing the crown to BMW and then second-place to Audi.
