The G-Class SUV is one of the most renowned rugged all-wheel drive vehicles, with many comparing its life cycle to Land Rover’s Defender.
Now, according to sources close to the German automaker’s plans, the next generation of the tough 4×4 could spell a completely different story. Mercedes-Benz is ready to make extensive changes to one of its most enduring SUVs, with the major overhaul due for 2017 set to bring an all new vehicle to the market.
The only department where we could see the link to the old faithful Gs of our grandparents is the exterior styling, where Mercedes will tread carefully and keep the overall rugged looks, together with the near-vertical windscreen. But, inspiration could be drawn from the futuristic Ener-G-Force concept car revealed at the 2012 Los Angeles motor show.
Technically, everything would change, with sources disclosing that the next G would have its width increased by up to 101 mm, to an overall 1859 mm, to enhance stability and interior space. The body structure would be affected, with Mercedes using more aluminum and high-strength steel in order to reduce weight by as much as 200 kg, while also adding a new front suspension.
The interior would be thoroughly updated, with better, broader seats front and back, added comfort perks and especially designed to accommodate the latest platforms of driver-assistance, safety, infotainment and connectivity systems.
