It’s not everything about electrics and batteries and the MEB platform at VW, as the German automaker has recently confirmed it will pump up the Up to pocket rocket status with a GTI version starting 2018.
The Golf GTI is one of the world’s all-time favorite hot hatchbacks – thanks to affordability, performances and daily driver usefulness – so it’s no wonder the company is trying to apply the formula to other models in its range. The latest is their smallest in the roster – the Up. Apparently the Up GTI will appear in 2018 packing the same 1.0-liter 3-cylinder TSI but massaged to up to 114 horsepower (85 kilowatts) – which is enough considering the model tips the scales at 880-kilogram (1,940-pound). The sprint time to 62 mph (100 km/h) should be of no more than 8.8 seconds with a manual gearbox – and there’s no word about a more comfy automatic.
The up GTI will of course also look the part. It should feature a sporty body kit, as well as numerous distinctive elements both inside and out – including sport seats, a sport steering wheel, and sport pedals. Of course, the signature red accenting on the exterior and grille should be there to please the fans. This of course has been long in the making – VW first teased an Up GT concept back in 2012 packing 100 horsepower (74 kilowatts) and some modifications to the exterior.
